(5) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Fiction. Students understand, make inferences and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of fiction and provide evidence from text to support their understanding. Students are expected to:

(A) analyze isolated scenes and their contribution to the success of the plot as a whole in a variety of works of fiction;

(B) analyze differences in the characters’ moral dilemmas in works of fiction across different countries or cultures;

(C) evaluate the connection between forms of narration (e.g., unreliable, omniscient) and tone in works of fiction; and

(D) demonstrate familiarity with works by authors from non-English-speaking literary traditions with emphasis on 20th century world literature.

Tuesday- Reading Practice: Irony – 3 types

Wednesday- Begin “The Monkey’s Paw”- vocabulary and illustrations in interactive notebooks

Thursday- Read “The Monkey’s Paw”

Friday- Finish reading “The Monkey’s Paw”; Begin Plot Analysis

 

Plans for the Week of 9/14-9/18

Monday- Quiz, Finish Skills Review (types of irony & context clues) Project assigned. Presentation is due Friday.

Tuesday- Work in class on “Mary Maloney’s Trial” project (writing portion) with partners.

Wednesday- Methods of persuasion, closing arguments

Thursday- Testing

Friday- Project presentation- closing arguments for Mary Maloney’s murder trial. Defenders and prosecutors will read their persuasive essays to the jury.

September 7th- LABOR DAY HOLIDAY!

September 8th- Alfred Hitchcock video of “Lamb to the Slaughter” (compare/contrast)

Homework (due Friday, 9/11): Police Report and Crime Scene drawing for “LttS”

September 9th- Universal Screener and Kahoot review of “LttS”

September 10th- Literary Devices in “Lamb to the Slaughter”

September 11th- Test over “Lamb to the Slaughter” and The Roundtable Game

English II Plans for the Week of 8/31-9/4

Monday- Set-up our English Interactive Notebooks. Introduce vocabulary for “Lamb to the Slaughter” (discuss context clues, parts of speech, synonyms and antonyms)   Homework: Vocabulary Practice is due Friday.

Tuesday- Plot Analysis (activity in Interactive Notebook). Begin reading “Lamb to the Slaughter” together as a class.

Wednesday- Finish reading “Lamb to the Slaughter” followed by discussion. Work on finding text evidence to support answers to discussion questions.

Thursday-Complete “Plot Analysis” in Interactive Notebooks

Friday- Answer questions on “Lamb to the Slaughter” with partners.
